Difference Between Land Rover and Range Rover

LAND ROVER MODELS EXPLAINED

The difference between a Land Rover and a Range Rover SUV can be confusing. What is the difference? At a basic level, Land Rover is the company, while Range Rover is a type of vehicle that the company makes. Land Rover, manufactures both Land Rovers and Range Rovers. To further complicate matters, both vehicle types are all-wheel drive SUVs with British heritage. Both are excellent off-road, and both are called Rovers. So how to differentiate one from another?

First a bit of history: Land Rover was originally owned by a now defunct British car manufacturer called the Rover Company. The first Land Rover debuted in 1948 as a rugged vehicle, modeled after the Jeeps used in World War II. The vehicle was so popular that it evolved into the Land Rover company. In 1970, Land Rover launched the Range Rover SUV, a body-on-frame utility truck with extraordinary off-road capability. Land Rover was briefly owned by BMW in the 1990s and Ford in the 2000s. Today, the Land Rover and Range Rover brands are owned by the Indian company Tata Motors. They have been owned by Tata since 2008. Here are some ways to tell the difference between Land Rover and Range Rover SUVs.

RANGE ROVER VS DEFENDER: LAND ROVER STYLE AND SUBSTANCE

The Land Rover badge adorns the elegantly styled, road-ready SUVs, while its ostentatious fleet of Range Rover models packs the brand’s trademark ruggedness with heightened luxury. Today, the company is associated with another iconic British car manufacturer, Jaguar, under the name of Jaguar Land Rover. While the Defender generations are arguably Land Rover’s most recognizable, the three-row Discovery has a similar cache and remarkable passenger space. The smaller Land Rover Discovery Sport is the most affordable model, and we’ve done a 40,000-mile test with the fancier Range Rover Velar. The top-of-the-line Range Rover is deep pocketing, but offers big rewards.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN LAND AND RANGE ROVER?

Today, Land Rover and Range Rover seem to be different brands, but it is important to remember that they are actually one and the same thing. Land Rover emerged in the late 1940s, but launched its first Range Rover model in 1970 as a more luxurious 4×4 vehicle that was still just as capable off-road.

Today there are more Range Rover models than Land Rovers, but while Land Rovers used to be rough-and-ready farm vehicles with very little comfort, today the levels of luxury between the two are very close.

The Land Rover range starts with the Defender, which used to be a boxy, utilitarian 4×4 that harked back to the original Land Rovers. Now, it’s a much more expensive and upmarket model, though it’s still boxier than most and retains Land Rover’s famous off-road credentials. It is available in two lengths and with five or seven seats.

The next model is the Discovery Sport, which puts more emphasis on comfort and road handling, but will take you further over rough terrain than most of its alternatives. It is also available with five or seven seats, but with only one length.
