It’s that easy to turn your TV into the monitor your computer or laptop needs.
Have you ever thought that your television is basically like a huge monitor? What’s more, it will most likely have better features than the screen you use on your computer or laptop today.
There is no reason why you should not use your home TV as a monitor and that is why today we are going to teach you how to do it. This will allow you to take multitasking to the extreme since you will gain a lot of screen space.
We do not recommend buying a TV expressly to use it with your computer (there are excellent monitors for that ), but if you already have a good TV at home, this can be a good alternative to work, play, make video calls, watch movies…
Before we go any further, we’d like to make it clear that there are obviously many types of TVs, with different sizes, resolutions and technologies. It’s impossible to write a tutorial that goes well with all of them, but this article will give you an idea.
How to connect your computer or laptop to the TV
First of all, you will need to connect your computer or laptop to the TV . So you can use it as a monitor. In most cases, both devices will have an HDMI port, so just use an HDMI cable to connect them to each other.
If this is not your case, you will need to check which ports your TV and your computer have in common (although they may not have any). Depending on how old your devices are, they will have VGA or DVI ports or even DisplayPort and USB-C if they are newer.
In conclusion, you will need to purchase a cable that can connect one device to another (and transfer both video and audio). Remember that they do not necessarily have to be the same ports, since you can buy, for example, an HDMI to DisplayPort cable.
It is necessary to point out that the ports also have different sizes, so sometimes you will need the mini version of one or the other port. You may even need to resort to an adapter to connect the TV and the computer.
How to configure display settings
With any luck, you can already start using the TV as a display for your computer by connecting the two devices together. However, the technology does not always work automatically and you will need to adjust its settings.
You may have noticed that this will only work if the computer you are connecting the TV to already has another screen. In this first example, then, we show you how to use the TV as a second screen (number ‘2’ in the image above).
For a window that you have open on your computer to appear on the television, all you have to do is drag it “outside” the computer to the television. In the settings panel you can configure so that the numbers ‘1’ and ‘2’ correspond to one or the other screen.
Those who want the TV to be their only screen should go to another section of the ‘Display Settings’ panel. In ‘Multiple screens’, pull down the menu and select the option ‘Show only 2’ (in our case, ‘2’ is the TV).
In this section you can also adjust the resolution and scale of your TV screen, which probably need to be changed. That will depend on each device, but in our case we have selected 4K resolution and 200%.
