Lord of the Rings: Gollum, Daedalic Entertainment’s third-person action-adventure game, racks up critics left and right and is the latest taste of failed launch . And we have had too many in recent times.
Any game located in Tolkien’s grand universe is eagerly awaited. And more in this case due to the novelty of Gollum’s leading role , being deformed and corrupted in body and soul by the power of the Ring, of great importance in this world and which in this title is located between the events of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. But how sadly it has happened other times, a valuable license has been wasted with the release of something unplayable .
The reviews on large portals like Metacritic have been fierce. At the time of writing this article, the scores from professional media are 3.6 out of 10 and those from users are even worse, 1.9 out of 10 . The game randomly crashes between 5 and 10 minutes into the game. As Gollum uses a checkpoint system you will have to replay the same segment over and over again when the game crashes. It’s only the beginning, because in addition to numerous technical problems, including an incorrect transition between scenes that often drops the character in a mess of polygons.
The drop in frame rate during cutscenes is noticeable, as well as noticing that the characters in the background are actually 2D and not 3D. The game structure itself and its lack of originality have also been criticized . In fact, the gameplay and story structure betrays the game completely, offering a forgettable experience. Even after changing the landscape, the gameplay and setting follow the same patterns, but with different actors, in the same empty spaces.
Lord of the Rings: Gollum, another release to forget
It must be said that the game was initially scheduled to be released in 2021, so there has been development time and, furthermore, it is not a port and it fails on all platforms. And if more time is needed, then use it and don’t release something unplayable. It is hardly believable that the developer was unaware of his problem… Daedalic Entertainment has had to come out on the scene with an apology and acknowledgment of the situation :
A few words from the » The Lord of the Rings: Gollum™ » team pic.twitter.com/adPamy5EjO
— The Lord of the Rings: Gollum (@GollumGame) May 26, 2023
“We would like to sincerely apologize for the disappointing experience many of you have had with The Lord of the Rings: Gollum upon its release. We deeply acknowledge and regret that the game has not lived up to the expectations we set for ourselves or our dedicated community. Please accept our sincerest apologies for any disappointment this may have caused.”
And now that? The development team says they are listening to player feedback and “working diligently to address bugs and technical issues that many of you experienced.” The apologies are appreciated, but they should entail, to begin with, the return of what was paid for the game. Some of the technical problems can be fixed, but there are others that will not be able to be solved no matter how many patches are released.
Video games are the first entertainment industry and move a colossal amount of money. Also, games are getting more expensive and players deserve respect enough to put up with these types of releases . And it’s not the first fiasco in recent times and not just in PC ports . Go adding Cyberpunk 2077, Jedi Survivor, Redfall, Forspoken, The Last of Us Part 1 and a long etc. Too much insult to the players who keep the business going.
